Yarning Circle – News From Around The Diocese | Celebrating the Release of the Reviewed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy

Posted 12 December 2017 by Beth Riolo in Yarning Circle – News From Around The Diocese

The reviewed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy was released 20 October 2017 at a gathering of educators, school leaders and Aboriginal Elders and community members.

The Release of the Policy was celebrated with a Welcome to Country, beautiful singing by Bandria McLeod and traditional dancing by the St John the Evangelist High School Dance groups.

The Policy is aligned to all education policies according to the Diocesan Education Policy Framework. It clearly acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as the First Peoples of our country with the longest continuous cultures in the world and sets about providing expectations for schools and teachers to support them in working towards a more reconciled world.

The Policy utilises three key focus areas: Developing Cultural Competency, Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students and Engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Families and Communities. The Policy also complements a range of educational, pastoral and cultural initiatives to improve our outcomes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education.
