7 year old Matthew Smyth, a Year 2 student at St John the Evangelist Catholic Primary School in Campbelltown, has taken out FIRST PRIZE in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) English Competition.

ICAS is the most comprehensive suite of academic assessments for primary and secondary students, attracting around one million student entries from over 6,300 schools in Australia and New Zealand annually. Students from more than 20 other countries including Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Malaysia, South Africa and the USA also participate in ICAS each year.

Students with the top score in each subject (Digital Technologies, English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing), in each year level, receive a medal and a medal winner's certificate, at a special ceremony.  Matthew, who was presented with his medal at the University of NSW, was one of just 123 medal recipients out of 207,000 international students that sat the ICAS English test.

Matthew's family, his teacher Mrs Libro (pictured) and school community are extremely proud of him!
