National Families Week, held from 15 to 21 May, aims to celebrate the vital role that families play in Australian society.

Catholic Education and CatholicCare in the Diocese of Wollongong, are proud to again partner to promote National Families Week in our Catholic schools.

National Families Week encourages students, parents and school staff to reflect on their own families; the role that families play in enriching and supporting us in our personal growth and goals; and what it means to be part of a caring, nurturing community.

This year’s theme is Making Moments Matter, recognising that even within the busy schedules of parents and children, it is absolutely vital to consciously take time and make the most of family life and celebrate the meaning and importance of family.

Making Moments Matter, was developed by CatholicCare in collaboration with five student interns from the University of Notre Dame, Sydney. It has been designed to provide parents and teachers with ideas, activities and resources that encourage family connectedness in the home and school community.

It is hoped that school communities will engage with, and utilise, the resource toolkit to demonstrate their shared commitment to the mission of building stronger families and resilient communities.

The material complements the various age groups and curriculum. Activities for primary aged students focus on reflecting on time spent with family and aims to stimulate ideas to encourage more activity with the family. For older students, National Families Week aims to educate them on the differences in the types of families and how they can contribute and participate positively in the wider community.

Making Moments Matter is divided into three categories:

These categories provide easy access to customised prayer resources from school assemblies to meal times, activities for the classroom and the home, and creative ideas and reading for all.

Making Moments Matter is designed to allow teachers and parents to pick and choose exactly what suits them. Making Moments Matter will continue to be available after Families Week, and parents and teachers are encouraged to keep interacting with the resources.

CatholicCare provides services to the whole community, supporting people to build positive relationships and connected lives. CatholicCare facilitates programs for families that both teachers and parents can access and participate in. To get involved, click on the categories listed above.
