News | Dragons Community teaches SPX students about making positive choices

Posted 21 August 2017 by Catholic Education in News

During Term 3, St Pius X Unanderra have been fortunate to have Dragons U20 NYC players from the 'Dragons Community' program, come out to their school to to work with them on building the vital skill of resilience.

Dragons Community has been very proactive in schools, particularly in the area of PD, Health and PE, aiming to make a powerful and lasting impact through promoting health and wellbeing and making positive choices regarding their physical, social and mental health.

The Dragons players use a series of books, Dusty and Friends (by Sarah Tillott), to get their message across to their young and captive audience. Children can relate to the dragon characters in the books, each with their own issues to deal with, like anger management, anxiety and bullying. The 45 minute lessons, which were over a 3 week period, included reading the book then heading outside to play games that reinforced the content.

St Pius X staff and students would like to thank Luke Potter (NRL Development), Adam Bezzina (Dragons Community Liaison), Hayden Lomax (NYC U20s) and Reece Robson (NYC 20s) for giving of their time to teach the students some very important life-skills, that will help empower them to deal with conflict in a more positive way, all while getting fit and having heaps of fun!
