'Environment Matters' Blog | A Creative Answer to Pope Francis' Call

St Pius X Unanderra have been working on the installation of a mural, composed of plastic bags woven into a pre-existing chain link fence.  This creative re-use of plastic bags, speaks directly to Pope Francis’ call to alter the contemporary ‘throwaway culture’ (Laudato Si, 22).

The idea for the mural, which features a cross and Beating Heart of Mission, came from uni student and former School Captain of St Pius X, Harriet Adams, who is currently studying graphic design at the University of Wollongong.  It embraces the call to mission as a core expression of our Catholic identity.

At all phases of the artwork, from collecting bags, to weaving the artwork, and now into the final stages of completion, the involvement of over 200 community members was key in bringing the Emmaus story to life.

We can all cooperate as instruments of God for the care of creation, each according to his or her own culture, experience, involvements and talents (Laudato Si, 14).
