The Birth of Jesus and the Visit of the Magi

I chose to paint the passage Matthew 1:18-25 and represent the ‘Birth of Jesus and the visit of the Magi’ because this story is special to myself and my family. My life has been a journey that needs prayer and faith but I have been blessed by many gifts, just like the gifts the Magi presented to Jesus. The silhouette of the Magi carrying the gifts is depicted in front of a mountain. This mountain represents a local mountain, Cambewarra Mountain, which I feel very connected to. I feel the peacefulness of this mountain is a gift to me which always guides me home, just like the star guided the Magi.

I created my artwork with alcohol ink as the background, black paint, and posca pen for the silhouette, finishing it off with golden flakes. The richness of the purple represents the royalty of the king being born, with purple dye used in ancient times being so expensive and rare only royalty could use it. The gold flakes remind us of the golden star leading the way and the black frame reminds us of the dark times the world was experiencing before Jesus came to save us all.
