CEDoW’s Largest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Year 12 Cohort

The gathering offered an opportunity to give thanks, reflect on the students' educational journeys, and honor the deep connection between Catholic faith and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander spiritualities.

During his homily, Bishop Brian reflected on the journey of the graduating students, offering words of encouragement as they prepare to take their next steps beyond school. He urged students to carry their values forward as Bearers of Christ’s Love, while remaining deeply rooted in their cultural identities.

Central to his message was the importance of honouring Elders, walking with pride in culture, and nurturing an enduring connection to Country—values that align closely with CEDoW’s vision for education and community growth.

A special element of the Mass was Bishop Brian wearing sacred vestments featuring artwork designed by former student Shaleah Saunders. The vestments, including a painted stole presented to Bishop Brian last year, went through a smoking ceremony prior to being worn for the first time on Thursday.

Shaleah travelled from Moree to attend the Mass and share the story behind her design. Her artwork integrates four local totems, creating a visual expression that connects Aboriginal understandings of Country, creation, truth, and community with the Catholic faith.

As our Year 12 students complete their final weeks of schooling, the CEDoW community extends its congratulations to each graduate. We acknowledge the Dharawal, Tharawal, Gundungurra, and Yuin nations on whose traditional lands our school communities learn, gather, and grow.

We keep our 2026 graduates in our prayers as they finish their HSC exams and step out into the world, walking gently on Country and leading with purpose.
