Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong announces new K-12 college in Leppington, named after Saint Carlo Acutis

The Most Reverend Brian Mascord DD, Catholic Bishop of Wollongong, and Catholic Education Diocese of Wollongong (CEDoW) today announced the establishment of a new co-educational Kindergarten to Year 12 Catholic College in the rapidly expanding Leppington area. This significant development will provide high-quality Catholic education for families in the region, offering a seamless learning journey from a child's foundational years through to their final year of secondary schooling.

Set to be located on the corner of Heath and Rickard Roads, the new college underscores the diocese’s commitment to addressing the educational needs of the growing communities of the Macarthur region.

The college is set to welcome its first students before 2030, with the official opening year to be announced within the next six months. In its inaugural intake, the college will offer Kindergarten and Year 7 classes, while enrolments for Years 1 to 6 will be considered based on community demand. The college will proudly continue the rich tradition of Catholic education by nurturing students’ academic, social, emotional, and spiritual growth within an engaging faith-based environment.

Most Reverend Brian Mascord DD, Bishop of Wollongong, revealed the college will be the first K-12 college in Australia to be named after Saint Carlo Acutis, following his canonisation by Pope Leo XIV on 7 September 2025.

"We have chosen to place this new college under the patronage of Carlo Acutis for several reasons that resonate deeply with the challenges and aspirations of today's young people," Bishop Mascord explained. "Carlo Acutis is the first millennial saint, making him an incredibly relatable figure for our students. He was a young man who navigated the digital world, not by shying away from it, but by using technology as a powerful tool for good. He related to his peers with the utmost respect, recognising the person of Jesus in everyone he encountered.

"Carlo exemplified authenticity, encouraging everyone to ‘be an original’ rather than conform, a powerful message for young people seeking meaning and purpose in our complex world. Carlo’s devotion to the Eucharist will be central to the spiritual life of our college, encouraging students to develop their own personal relationship with Jesus."

Peter Hill, CEDoW’s Executive Director of Schools, said “The Catholic Church is always at the forefront of meeting needs. This is a direct response to the growing demand from parents for Catholic schools in South West Sydney, and a wonderful opportunity to invite more families to experience a high quality Christ-centred education in the Catholic tradition.”
