Student Spotlight
Two Wollongong diocese graduates; Delta Amidzovski (Corpus Christi Catholic High School, Oak Flats) and Jessica Cole (St Mary Star of the Sea College, Wollongong) have been chosen to represent Australia at the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August.
Both Delta and Jessica were outstanding athletes during their time at school, representing their schools and the Diocese for many years. Delta excelled in athletics, while Jessica made her mark in swimming. Both young women proved to be elite athletes, moving through sporting pathways from school level to New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges (NSWCCC) and on to compete at School Sport Australia level.
Jessica has remained connected to CEDoW since graduating school. She is now a second-year primary teaching scholarship student, through our Step Into Teaching program, undertaking study and work with the Catholic Education Office while supporting diocesan swimming events.
Delta and Jessica were also invited to share their inspiring journeys as guest speakers at the 2024 Catholic Development Fund Sports Awards.
In the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games, the CEDoW Sport team caught up with both athletes as they completed their final preparations, who reflected on what it means to represent their country at the Commonwealth Games.
Jessica Cole reflected on the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
"Representing Australia isn’t just about racing in green and gold—it’s knowing every early morning and sacrifice was worth it. Standing alongside our best athletes and wearing the colours of the champions I’ve looked up to is a privilege I’ll never take for granted."
Delta described her selection for the Commonwealth Games as a proud milestone.
"Making the Commonwealth Games team in my first official year as a senior athlete is incredibly rewarding. It proves I’m capable of competing at this level, and I’m so proud to represent Australia in Glasgow."
Jessica said her focus is on embracing the experience, performing at her best and contributing to the Australian team.
“My biggest goal is to swim the best race I can. I want to execute my race plan, perform under pressure and finish knowing I gave it everything. As this is my first Australian senior team, I also want to soak up the experience, learn from the athletes around me and contribute to the team environment. If I can do those things while achieving a personal best performance, I’ll be really happy.”
Delta said her goal is to embrace the opportunity and deliver her best performance on one of athletics’ biggest stages.
“I genuinely believe I’m capable of making the final and challenging for a podium position, but I’m also really excited to embrace the whole experience. Competing at a major championship like the Commonwealth Games is something I’ve dreamed of, and I want to make the most of every moment while trusting the work I’ve put in to be in the best possible shape to perform.”
Jessica will compete in the 200m Butterfly, while Delta will contest the Long Jump.
The CEDoW community congratulates both Jessica and Delta on earning their place on the national teams for the Commonwealth Games. This is a remarkable achievement and one that reflects hard work, discipline, and determination.
