07 May 2025

Year 9 student, Lucy Bacales, from St John the Evangelist Catholic High School, Nowra, has received accolades for her poignant artwork, titled ‘They Shall not Grow Old’. The powerful piece, inspired by a personal connection and her family's history of military service, earned Lucy first place at the prestigious 2025 RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Art Competition.

Lucy’s compelling artwork, a visual testament to the enduring legacy of Australia’s servicemen and women, was prominently featured on the cover of the 2025 RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Service Program. The talented young artist was honoured at a special ceremony held at the Anzac Memorial in Sydney on April 3, 2025, where she received her finalist certificate and medal from the esteemed Governor of NSW, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC.

“My painting symbolises that as we grow older and we reach the 110th year since Gallipoli, the faces of our nation’s heroes have faded, but their sacrifice and courage will never be forgotten,” explained Lucy. “I tried to personally connect my father and grandfather, who served in the Australian Defence Force, and my experience with having to say goodbye to my dad when he was deployed for a couple of years.”

Lucy expressed her gratitude for the experience, stating, “It was such an honour to attend the RSL and Schools Remember ANZAC Service and have my artwork displayed at the Anzac Memorial. I am so grateful for having the opportunity to be part of the competition.”

In recognition of her outstanding achievement, Lucy received a special invitation to attend the 2025 NSW ANZAC Day Dawn Service at Martin Place as a VIP guest. “This whole experience has made me a better artist and taught me about the history of the Anzacs,” Lucy enthused. “I’m so excited to attend the Dawn Service in Martin Place on April 25 and be recognised by my school community.”
