Green thumbs from all over Australia came together to help celebrate Planet Ark’s 22nd National Tree Day.  Among the many green thumbs were students of St Pius X, Unanderra.

Our school was fortunate enough to receive a number of exquisite, fascinating, low maintenance native plants, generously donated by Wollongong City Council and the Botanic Gardens.

Planet Ark estimated that over 250,000 green thumbs resulted in the planting of up to 1,000,000 native trees, shrubs and edibles, planted at over 3000 sites, helping to reduce Greenhouse gases and making the World a more beautiful place to live in.

With the help of volunteers from the Botanic Gardens, students from SPX have learnt a lot of different skills in planting and taking care of our plants for a sustainable future, following the message of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si.  Students had a great time immersed in Mother Nature and celebrating her beauty that we are all responsible for. The plants, that students of SPX planted, will help the environment for future generations. 

Thanks to Wollongong Council and The Botanic Gardens, the donation of over 60 plants were used to fill our school entrance, after our original plants were ruined due to a plumbing accident.

On behalf of the St Pius X community we are very thankful for everything the Wollongong City Council and the Botanical Gardens have done for us.
