'Environment Matters' Blog | St Columbkille’s Enviro Ninjas

In September, leading up to the Feast of St Francis, the community of St Columbkille’s celebrated, the Season of Creation.

As part of this celebration our Year 6 students led us in the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. As part of this prayer and action our Year 6 Enviro Ninjas have taken up Pope Francis’ challenge to take care of God’s creation and our common home. Each Wednesday students, in Years 4, 5 & 6 collect food scraps after Crunch and Sip. The waste collected feeds our school worms and then is used to nourish our school garden, known as ‘The Patch’.

The Patch grows seasonal vegetables, some fruits, herbs and even ornamental flowers. The students who volunteer to assist with the upkeep of the garden are often treated to a vegetable snack or two and when growth is in large quantities the produce is used by our School Canteen
