The Garden at Holy Spirit College Bellambi was literally buzzing with excitement recently as the school's Environmental Group heralded the arrival of some very special guests.

Friday 9th of February saw the Environmental Group and a number of additional students gather in one of the science labs for a fascinating talk by Melissa Ballantyne from Sydney Stingless Bees.

In addition were other guests, Beth Riolo Professional Officer (Environment Advocacy Outreach from the CEO and Claire Butterworth, one of the Environmental Group's founding members all the way back in 2018 and an ardent campaigner for the College getting a hive.

Melissa spoke animatedly about the species of bee, the hierarchical structure of the bee society and workings of the hive. She also informed all about “bee wars” and what happens when a colony of bees decide to pose a hostile takeover of another hive.

The group were intrigued and asked many questions.

In preparation The Garden had been planted with some new bee-friendly flowers, under the direction of Ms Difford, the science technician, and decorated with bunting in celebration.

After the talk the group ventured out to The Garden and huddled around the hive as Claire was given the honour of opening the entrance and releasing the bees to cheers and applause.

The bees are the species Tetragonula carbonaria. Also known as sugarbag bees, they are tiny, stingless and will not hurt anyone. They forage on various plants and the Environmental Group will be doing an extensive project on these delightful and vital pollinators.

The school community was very pleased to welcome its newest residents.
