My artwork, entitled ‘Dawn of a New Beginning’, depicts the contemporary take on the ‘Visit of the Magi’ to the Christ child. I was drawn to elements of the Pop Art movement, specifically the work of artist Andy Warhol and the way that he uses repetition of images and bright colours.
The medium I chose to use was digital and I used Keynote to create my artwork. Individual icon images were used as the basis for the chosen figures.
The three main figures that I used to depict the Magi are three notable faith-filled women of the Catholic Church. St Therese (Gold representing power), Mary MacKillop (Green representing faith) and Mother Teresa (Purple representing justice). I intentionally chose women to signify the importance that women should play in the narrative of our faith. These women in particular, I believe, devoted their lives to their work and it was their love of God and the power that he holds that kept their faith throughout all of their own trials, as if following the Star of Bethlehem throughout it all.
