My artwork is inspired by the reading from Luke 1:26-36, Mary and the Annunciation. Reading this passage, I am struck by many emotions…excitement, curiosity, intrigue and happiness. It is the moment Mary hears the news that she is to be the mother of Jesus, and I can imagine all of these emotions she is feeling.

I created my artwork using just lead pencil and pieces of the passage surrounding Mary. The lack of colour and detail emphasises the detail and clarity of the Gospel passage. I incorporated blending to effectively show where Mary’s eyes are covered from the brightness of the angel, as he said to Mary… “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you” (v. 35).

This passage connects to my life, as my family and I have travelled extensively both in Australia and overseas. These wonderful times will live in my heart just as the angel’s message lived in the heart of Mary.
