My artwork was inspired by the Journey to Bethlehem (Luke 2:3-5). I chose this passage because I connected to Mary’s story in a way that I feel some people wouldn’t understand, the feeling of being lost, having so many emotions that you don’t know which way to turn. I incorporated this into my artwork by using a paint pouring technique. I did this with various acrylic colours, creating a fluid, swirling effect.

The swirls represent Mary’s overwhelming emotions; although it was a time of joy, she would have been questioning why God had chosen her and she would have been feeling scared of the unknown, just as I feel when something scary or difficult happens.

The gold throughout my work symbolises Mary’s unwavering faith in God. This God-given gift is what would have seen her through a time of immense difficulty and fear. So when I am feeling lost or confused, like Mary, I call upon my faith in God to get me through.
