The Angel said to her, ‘May the Holy Spirit come upon you’ (Luke 1:26-38). My artwork shows the story of the Annunciation when the Angel Gabriel came to Mary and said the Holy Spirit would come upon her and she would be pregnant with baby Jesus, our unborn King. The tree resembles how the branches of an olive tree fall off and regrow as a symbol of new and everlasting life. Mary is sheltered in the tree keeping her safe and at peace with what is to come. The dove represents the Holy Spirit and the leaf in its mouth is a symbol of the new life that Jesus will bring to the world.

I chose the slab of wood because this piece of wood adds an aspect of realism to my artwork. The twenty five rings circling the wood are a reminder of the day of Jesus’ birth. Mary is contemplating motherhood just as my mum and Nona would have done. I feel that my artwork reflects my family and their togetherness throughout the joys and tribulations of life. It illustrates the importance of new beginnings when they come before us.
