‘They bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts’ (Matthew 2: 9–12). My artwork reflects this scripture by Matthew. I have recreated the moment when the Magi reached the stable bringing with them opulent gifts to honour the newborn king. This act of bringing gold, frankincense and myrrh signifies Jesus' importance.
The Magi acknowledge they are in the presence of a far more worthy king. This very significant act at the first Christmas sets the tradition of gift giving and acknowledging loved ones at Christmas. I have chosen to use graphite pencil and sketch my artwork, working with clean lines and shading to add depth of character. This choice of media allows me to create a monochrome image, the greyscale representing the humility of the Magi in the grand presence of the Lord.
